The Solar Energy Water Heater Page

Hi and welcome to the solar energy water heater page.

Heating hot water uses the most amount of energy, (up to 40%) so it is understandable not to waste the suns energy to help reduce our hot water energy bills.

There are two main types;

  • Flat plate collectors.
  • Evacuated tube collectors.

They work in similar ways by passing water that is usually mixed with anti-freeze through a series of pipes that absorb the suns rays in the form of heat, and then pass through a hot water storage cylinder, (full of domestic use-water) whereby the process repeats itself.

And the heated water then goes down to the taps in the house or main water heater where it is heated further by electricity or gas.

Savings.

A typical system can provide you with up to 75% of your water needs, depending on your climate.

Maintenance.

Solar hot water systems require very little maintenance.

A yearly check-up by yourself and a 3 to 5 year check by a professional is sufficient.

Setup.

Similar to solar panels, 3 by 4 meters per panel, and a roof that is facing towards the sun as much as possible, during the day.

Cost.

A domestic hot water systems can set you back $5000-$10,000, although you can install it yourself for $1000-$3000.

Pros, cons.

The drawbacks are the initial high costs of installation, the chance of the water freezing, (in some cheaper units) reducing the efficiency, and the need for a backup heater in most climates.

The positives are less maintenance than using solar panels, to do the same job, and long life expectancy of 20 years or more.

Important.

Also it pays to remember when you are shopping for a solar hot water heater that the simple passive designed units will last considerably longer than units with controllers, sensors, etc  that are prone to breaking down more often.
